First radial lounge for daycare angiography and angioplasty at SSB Hospital Faridabad

 Union Minister Krishan Pal Gurjar recently inaugurated the first radial lounge for heart angiography and angioplasty in Delhi-NCR at SSB Heart and Multispeciality Hospital, Faridabad. Dr SS Bansal, CMD and senior interventional cardiologist at the hospital, prefers to do all the procedures through radial route.

It is a procedure done to find out whether there are blocks in the vessels that carry blood to the heart muscles. Usually, it is done as an inpatient procedure in almost all hospitals. But with this launch, patients, who need angiography and angioplasty, can enjoy the ease of the radial lounge without getting admitted to the intensive care unit. They can relax on luxury couches, watch the radial angiography procedure, get their radial angiography and angioplasty done in the presence of their one attendant and go home the same day.

ADVANTAGES OF THIS FACILITY
• It will help the patients save significant money as they can get the procedure on a daycare basis and go home immediately after the procedure.
• It is a very safe procedure without any risk of bleeding at the puncture site, whereas in conventional femoral route, one can lose much blood without any apparent bleeding visible. This blood loss is deep inside the thigh or abdomen, and can become life threatening without any visible sign of blood loss.
• For heart attack patients also, radial angioplasty and stenting are much safer as compared to femoral angioplasty stenting.
• Patient can walk immediately after the procedure and even use the toilet. There is no need for any bed rest unlike in usual femoral procedures. Patients can sit on a bed or couch and eat their food after the procedure.
• It is a boon, especially for obese patients in whom the femoral artery is very deep, making it difficult to puncture and to stop bleeding after the procedure.
• Radial procedure can be done even in patients with heart failure, backache, back deformity and severe obesity.

For females, it is more comfortable as they don’t have to expose their thighs.

• Because of double arterial supply to hand from radial as well as ulnar, there is no risk to hand blood circulation.
  • In smokers and diabetics, sometimes leg arteries and abdominal arteries are blocked. then this radial route becomes the only option.
  • There is no risk of nerve injury unlike femoral route as there is no nerve near radial artery.

All the advantages make it a cost-effective, safe and comfortable procedure. However, not all cardiologists are experts at doing the radial procedure. Dr SS Bansal is an expert in radial angiography and angioplasty and the first one to do so in Haryana.
