Hypotension: Symptoms & Treatment

Low blood pressure can develop for many different reasons, which is why the same treatment may not be appropriate for everyone. Dehydration is one common cause because inadequate fluid levels reduce blood volume and can result in a fall in blood pressure. Certain medications, heart disease, diabetes, hormonal disorders, neurological conditions, pregnancy, and prolonged standing can also increase the likelihood of hypotension.

The symptoms can range from relatively mild dizziness and weakness to fainting and confusion. Some people particularly notice symptoms when getting out of bed or standing after sitting for a long period. Making gradual changes in position may help reduce these episodes in people with postural hypotension.

Preventive measures can also form an important part of blood pressure management. Staying adequately hydrated, following a balanced diet, avoiding long periods of standing without movement, and getting up gradually can help support blood pressure stability in suitable individuals. However, dietary changes such as increasing salt intake should not be made without medical advice, particularly for people who have kidney disease, heart conditions, or other health concerns.

If symptoms are frequent or becoming more severe, identifying the underlying reason is important for appropriate management.
